For many students across the country, the time from Thanksgiving through New Years is a time of numerous holiday activities and the much-anticipated arrival of Santa Claus. But for students who suffer from school based anxiety, the activities such as buying presents, holiday baking/cooking, and traveling long distances to visit relatives can be a dizzying time of stress and anxiousness in and out of the classroom. Not only is this true for both childrena and young adults, but this is also prevalent in fully grown adults as well. During this time of year, children are taking cues from the adults around them, both their parents and their teachers. If their teacher seems to be particularly stressed out, this anxiety can be acknowledged, interpreted, and reciprocated in the classroom, and at home.

Many teachers have said that the time before school lets out for holiday break is a time of major stress in the classroom for traditional students, but doubly for students who already suffer from school related anxiety. Teachers have admitted that students prefer the structure and routine of school over dealing with the demands and stressors that accompany the holiday season. Some children even see winter recess as an unwelcome disruption from the stability that a predictable routine gives to students who suffer from anxiety and who may be on the spectrum.

For many, the holidays are a flurry of exciting and wonderful activities, but for both teachers and parents alike, it is best to keep in mind that anxiety-ridden students may process the additional stressors in a different way than traditional students.

Green Valley Academy offers an academic program to children throughout the Philadelphia Region, grades 3 thru 12, who are experiencing school avoidance due to anxiety.  Green Valley Academy incorporates individualized instruction with low-enrolled classes to provide a safe and nurturing environment to students. Our goal is to have our students reconnect with school and forge ahead to a successful adulthood through the power of a great education.
