"Presenting Positive Standards for the Future of Education"

Green Valley Academy Reopening Plan

Green Valley Academy Coronavirus Safety Policies

At Green Valley Academy we pride ourselves on presenting positive standards for the future of education. In keeping in line with our rigorous standards, we continue to offer very low-enrolled classes for students with anxiety. We offer classes for those who need a sparsely populated classroom environment in order to succeed. Keeping our enrollment low as we always have, is now working in our favor during this time of Coronavirus.

We have relied on low student enrollment and individualized student support as part of our brand for more than 30 years. At our Parkesburg, Pennsylvania location we accept a maximum of 25 students in grades 5 through 12 (and have an area of over 4,000 square feet to conduct learning in).

We are delighted to announce that on Tuesday, September 1st, 2020, our teachers will return to their classrooms ready to meet and greet each one of our youngsters. We are excited to return to our classrooms and to have the opportunity to return to face to face instruction.

We would like to acknowledge those members of our staff who stepped up to the plate and continued their instruction for our students with distance learning. Virtual and remote learning are a challenge. Our teachers and administrators presented highly creative and innovative programs at the end of the last school year and into Extended School Year to keep our children engaged.  We thank our staff for their dedication and our students for their commitment to their education. They have gone above and beyond the call of duty.

It’s time to start anew

Now that we have announced our start date, we would like to share how our return to school will progress.

For the first week of school we will have half days. Students will arrive between 8:00 and 8:30am and leave GVA at 11:30. Lunch will be served at 11:00 am. This shortened day will give students and teachers a chance to become familiar with our new policies and procedures to keep everyone as safe as possible.

Full days of school will begin on Monday, September 13th, 2020. Classes will begin at 8:30am and end at 2:30pm. We will be on a regular bus schedule. (Transportation will vary according to student’s home school district. Be sure to consult with your home school district about their transportation protocol.)

GVA administration has decided to switch to a 4-day academic week.  School will be open Monday through Thursday, with Friday being utilized for professional sanitation and cleaning of the entire school to ensure the safest environment possible.  This schedule change will be evaluated on an ongoing basis and may involve more changes down the road.  The school calendar will be updated shortly.

Green Valley Academy Coronavirus Safety Standards:

  • Face Coverings for Adults

All Green Valley Academy staff, board members, and administrators will wear face shields at all times. Face shields will be provided to the staff by Green Valley Academy administration. Each staff member will have their name on their shield. Shields cannot be shared and will be sanitized at the end of each day.

There will be face masks available at the front door for visitors. Visitors must sign in and leave their address and telephone number on the Sign-in Sheet so they may be contacted if needed.

  • Face Coverings for Students

Students attending classes at GVA must wear a mask as they travel from room to room, in the parking lot, in the cafeteria, on the playground, and any time walking within the building. Once a student sits at their desk, they can remove their mask. Tables and desks will be placed six feet apart. Students must remain in a face covering from the time that they leave the bus, until the time they are picked up unless seated, eating, or drinking.

Each student must bring a mask to school. The student’s name should be written on the mask in bold letters. Students will not be permitted to share masks. If a child arrives at school without a mask, they will be separated from others and will be sent home. Extra masks will be kept in the Administration building in the event that a student’s masks breaks or becomes futile.

  • Building Modifications

From September until further notice there will be only one building in operation for students and teachers. That building was previously identified as the Intermediate Building. It will now be identified as the Instructional Building.

  • Protocol for Entering/Exiting the Instructional Building

All visitors will enter through the Headmaster’s Suite. Our Executive Administrative Assistant will greet each person that enters to be sure that they do not have a temperature above 99.9, are having no symptoms, and are wearing a proper mask. They will also be sure that hand sanitizer is utilized.

No visitors will be permitted back to the classroom areas. The door leading to the classrooms will be closed at all times.

Students and teachers for the elementary school (grades 5-8) will enter through the side entrance (or wheelchair accessible entrance) and exit through the front of the building. Entrance and Exit will be kept separate with the exemptions for person(s) who need to use the ramp due to physical limitations.

Students and teachers will have face coverings on upon entering and sanitize their hands.

Our Instructional Building remains locked at all times.

Classrooms and offices will be disinfected and cleaned according to the Pennsylvania Department of Education standards, nightly.

Signs will be posted to remind students and teachers of hygienic practices. Classes on proper hand washing and importance of social distancing will be given at the beginning of the school year to each student and to every new student that is enrolled.  Remediation classes will occur bi-weekly and on an as needed basis.

  • Classrooms

The Resource Room is located at the Instructional Building entrance. This classroom will be used for both Elementary and Secondary students throughout the day on an as needed basis. Desk and tables in the classroom will be placed six feet apart.

Any remote instruction (for students with limitations) will take place in the Resource Room. Instructional items and furniture will be disinfected at the end of each class or use.

Students will exit the Resource Room through the Elementary Classroom and out the front of the building.

There will be a maximum of 13 Elementary students registered at Green Valley Academy. Children will follow the regulations in place for face masks, hand sanitizing, and social distancing. Only one student and one staff member will be permitted in the kitchen area at a time.

Desks and tables will be arranged six feet apart and will be sanitized, along with instructional materials, after each class and again at the end of the day.

Students will enter the Elementary Classroom through the Resource Room and exit out the front door.

There will be a maximum of 12 Secondary students registered at Green Valley Academy.

Secondary students are to enter their part of the building through the cafeteria entrance and leave out of the side Exit area.

Boys will use that bathroom in the classroom. Girls can also use that bathroom as it is a unisex bathroom. If a girl would prefer to use a Girls bathroom, they can enter through the Headmasters Suite and go to the woman’s room at the rear of the building. Signs will be posted in the bathrooms to reinforce good hygiene.

Each Bathroom will contain hand sanitizer and disinfectant soap. Signs will be posted in the bathroom directing students and staff to wash hands with disinfectant soap for a minimum of 20 seconds.

In the Resource Room/Elementary Area there are two bathrooms. The bathroom in the Elementary area is designated for girls and the bathroom in the Resource Room is designated for boys. Signs will be posted in the bathrooms to reinforce good hygiene technique.

In the Secondary Classroom, the unisex bathroom will be used by all secondary students.  If a student would prefer to use a non-unisex bathroom, they may enter through the Headmaster’s suite and go to their designated bathroom as directed by the Executive Administrative Assistant at the front desk.  Signs will be posted in the bathrooms to reinforce good hygiene technique.

The children attending school for in-person instruction must have their Parent/Guardian fill out a Covid-19 Registration Acceptance Form. No student will be permitted into school unless this form is completed. In this form there will be a list of safety regulations that are to be initialed by the parent/ guardian and the student. The initials designate that those regulations are understood and accepted.  These forms will be emailed to each parent/guardian and sent via postal service and are expected to be completed and sent back as soon as possible.

Parents/guardians will also be asked to sign a Covid-19 waiver. This waiver designates that if their child becomes ill with Covid-19, Green Valley Academy will not be held responsible. Green Valley Academy staff will work diligently to fulfill the responsibility of presenting a clean, safe environment. It is not the intention of the Green Valley Academy staff to knowingly expose anyone to the Covid-19 virus. We will work hard to keep each child and their family as safe as possible.

Although we continue to have concerns about the Coronavirus, we are encouraged by the fact that our very low-enrolled school might help by having our constituents avoid infection because of the lessened exposure. Green Valley Academy has always encouraged a sparsely populated school enrollment. We trust that our policy will not only reinforce a strong instructional experience for each student but lessen their exposure to the virus.

We are asking parents not to send their student to school with a fever, cold or stomach ailment. If your child comes to school with a fever, they will be kept away from others and sent home.

These are trying times for everyone. Our goal at Green Valley Academy is to focus on what our children need and how to help them cope with the severe changes that have occurred. We hope to give your family a sense of support and comfort. If there is anything that we can do to ease your concerns, please do not hesitate to contact us. We are here to help.

We are all in this together. Our staff members will dedicate each day to the safety and welfare of your family.

If federal or state policies change, we will need to comply immediately. We will keep you informed of any adjustments to our Coronavirus policies.  (If a student’s local school district makes changes that effect transportation of your child, we will need to comply immediately).

In the meantime, we wish you a happy and safe summer and look forward to our return to the classroom this Fall.

With Sincere Best Wishes,
